Innomar SES-2000 System – Port of Melbourne

The Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) purchased an Innomar SES-2000 light parametric sub-bottom profiler (SBP) after comprehensive field trials. Acoustic Imaging, the Australian reseller and certified installation / support / training centre for Innomar products, assisted in the Harbour and Sea Acceptance tests.

The SES-2000 transducer was installed in the hull the PoMC vessel John Norgate. A purpose-built polyurethane block was constructed to seat the SES-2000 transducer within a metal frame mounted in the John Norgate’s structure. The SES-2000 transceiver unit was installed in the survey cabin with an external monitor added to better view the data during acquisition operations. Positioning and heave data were interfaced with the unit to provide fully geospatially-corrected data during logging. 

The Innomar SBP system was purchased initially to support sand capping operations across a dredge spoils area. The SBP data is being used in conjunction with multibeam echo sounder (MBES) data to ensure a suitable sand cap thickness is achieved across the dredge material. However, the system has been used or a number of other applications including pipeline detection (location and depth), subsurface structural assessment for the emplacement of navigation buoys, and sand thickness assessments in various locations around Port Philip Bay.
